Why your programme eventually stops working

Every programme works until it does not, and the standard response is to find another one. Sometimes that is right. More often the programme is fine and one of its assumptions has quietly stopped being true — about your recovery, your effort, your rate of progression or your life.

Reason one: you have run out of novice gains

Early progress is fast because almost any stimulus is new. As training age rises, the same effort returns less, and weekly load increases give way to monthly ones. This is the single most common 'plateau' and it is not a fault to be fixed — it is the shape of the curve.

Reason two: recovery stopped keeping up

Volume tends to creep upwards. Sessions get longer, extra sets appear, a race block adds running. If recovery does not rise with it, performance flattens and then falls — and a new programme with more volume makes it worse .

Tapering research finds substantial performance improvements from cutting volume while maintaining intensity, which is why a stalled athlete often sets a personal best shortly after a lighter week.

Reason three: effort quietly dropped

Sets that used to end two reps from failure now end four. Nothing on paper changed, so the log looks identical. Proximity-to-failure research makes clear that sets stopping well short of failure deliver far less stimulus — and self-rated effort is exactly where drift is hardest to notice.

Reason four: the plan stopped matching your week

A four-day upper/lower split written when you had four free evenings does not survive a new job, a new baby or marathon training. Missing the fourth day every week does not make it a three-day programme; it makes it a four-day programme you are failing at. Rewriting the week around what you actually have is the fix.

What to do, in order

  1. Take a lighter week: cut volume by half, keep intensity. Retest afterwards.
  2. Audit effort: on one session, take a safe isolation set to genuine failure and compare with your estimate.
  3. Check the boring inputs: sleep hours, protein, total weekly energy.
  4. Rewrite the week around the days you actually have, not the days you want.
  5. Only then change the exercises or the structure — and change one thing, not everything.
