How many sets per muscle group per week?
Weekly set count is the closest thing lifting has to a dose. It is also the number most people have never actually counted — and when they do, the total is usually either far lower or far higher than they assumed.
What the research actually shows
Muscle growth rises with weekly sets in a graded, dose-response way.
A meta-analysis of 15 studies found a significant dose-response relationship between weekly set volume and muscle hypertrophy, with higher weekly volumes producing greater gains across the range studied.

A 2022 systematic review concluded that around 12–20 weekly sets per muscle appears sufficient for most trained lifters, while noting wide variation between individuals and considerable uncertainty at the top end.

A working set taken within a few reps of failure counts. A warm-up set does not. Half a set that you abandoned because your grip gave out counts as something less than one. And a set of a compound lift counts fully for the prime mover, partially for everything else it happens to involve.
Auditing your own week
- Write down every working set you did last week, grouped by the muscle it was actually for.
- Remove warm-ups and any set that was not within a couple of reps of failure.
- Compare each muscle against the 10–20 range. Most people find one or two muscles far below and one far above.
- Fix the underfed muscle first. That is nearly always a bigger win than adding sets to the one you already prioritise.

Why the right answer differs between people
Your tolerable volume depends on everything competing for the same recovery: how much running is in the week, how heavy your sets are, how close to failure you take them , sleep , your training age, and where you are in a block. Someone running four times a week cannot absorb the same lifting volume as someone who only lifts — not because they are less capable, but because the total load is shared .
The honest signals that you are above your current ceiling are boring ones: performance drifting down over two or three weeks, sessions getting harder at the same loads, and motivation quietly falling.
