Progressive overload is more than adding weight

Progressive overload is the least controversial idea in training and the most commonly misapplied. The principle is simply that the body adapts to what it is repeatedly asked to do, so the ask has to keep growing. The mistake is assuming the ask can only grow in one direction: heavier.

A meta-analysis comparing periodised with non-periodised resistance training found greater maximal strength gains when the programme followed a planned structure over time, in both trained and untrained participants.

Six ways to make a session harder

Density deserves a warning. Shortening rest makes a session feel harder while making the sets themselves less productive for size and strength, because fatigue reduces the load you can handle . It is a conditioning lever wearing a strength lever's clothes.

How fast should the weight go up?

  1. Pick a rep range for the block — say 6–8 — and a target number of hard sets.
  2. Work at a load you can take to roughly two reps in reserve at the bottom of the range.
  3. Add reps each week until you reach the top of the range on all sets.
  4. Add the smallest available increment and drop back to the bottom of the range.
  5. Repeat. On big lower-body lifts this may be weekly; on small upper-body lifts it may be monthly.

When the weight stops moving

A stall is information, not failure. Before changing the programme, check the ordinary explanations: sleep, food, whether the session was placed after a hard run, whether you actually took the last few sets close to failure. Most stalls are recoverable at the same load once one of those is fixed.
