How many reps actually build muscle?
The 8–12 rep range has been repeated for so long that it feels like a law of physiology. It is not. It is a reasonable default that happens to sit in the middle of a much wider range of loads that all build muscle — and the reason it works has less to do with the number than with what that number makes you do.
What the research actually shows
Low and high loads produce similar muscle growth; strength gains clearly favour heavy loads.
