How many rest days do you actually need?

"One or two rest days a week" is the standard answer, and it is not wrong so much as incomplete. Rest requirements follow training stress. Someone doing three moderate gym sessions needs less of it than someone running 60 km and squatting twice, even though both are training five days.

What recovery is actually for

Adaptation happens between sessions, not during them. Rest days are when connective tissue repairs, the nervous system normalises and the training you did becomes fitness you keep. The limiting factor is rarely muscle — it is tendons, sleep debt and cumulative life stress.
