Deloads: when and why to take one
Training makes you tired before it makes you fitter. A deload is the week where you deliberately let fatigue fall faster than fitness, so the work you have already done can show up. Done well it costs nothing and reveals progress you could not see under fatigue.
What the research supports
Reducing volume while maintaining intensity is the most effective way to shed fatigue without losing fitness.
A meta-analysis of tapering studies found the largest performance improvements when training volume was reduced substantially while intensity and frequency were largely maintained, over roughly one to two weeks.
